The Book of Solutions is the latest film of Michel Gondry, director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2005). The feature is his first work since the 2015 feature, Microbe & Gasoline. Based on his personal experience while filming Mood Indigo in 2013, the film follows the struggle of Marc, an eccentric filmmaker, to regain his lost inspiration and creativity. He flees with his editor from the film company’s management, who want to fire him. He takes the footage with him to his aunt’s house in the countryside and struggles to find new inspiration. However, he fails to see the reality of his lackluster film and creates his own solution book. Marc suffering is amplified by Gondry’s unique imagination, wit, and fantastic reality, and the film eventually becomes a black comedy that satirizes both the pain of creation and the irresponsibility of the creator.
