Seoungmo (Shin Seokho), Namhee (Kim Seungyun), and Sangguk (Ha Seongguk) went to the same college. They try to make a film while staying at a guesthouse on a windy island, but they are clueless what their film will be about. Although their speech and movements are straightforward, the characters appear like ghosts wandering in some strange place far from the mainland. This uncanny impression primarily emanates from the consistent hazy texture of the images. As excessive light blurs the contours of the world, time flows and motion continues. What should we call this state of time and space in which the three individuals are wandering? The boundary of a world molded by vague elements and radical forms in IN WATER delivers a shock and wonder simultaneously, a novel experience even in Hong Sangsoo’s cinematic creations.
