Program Note
One′s existence is a hazy, reflected image of death. Park Chan-Wook questions the truth of such reflected image through <Judgement. > A corpse of a young woman is lying at the hospital morgue, just having arrived from major catastrophe. Two couples claiming the corpse as their daughter and a mortician, as well as insurance agent and a reporter all become a witness to determine the girl′s identity. A hideous scar isn′t enough evidence and the questions from truth-seeking reporters are ignored by couple′s tactful replies. Then a sudden appearance of a woman reveals the whole incident as a fraud targeting the insurance money and subsequent earthquake causes electrocution of everyone but the mortician, as if it′s a god′s punishment for our moral sins. <Judgement> is a sad self-portrait on the darker side of human soul, utilizing elements of traditional dramatic convention with its enhanced mise-en-scene.
