Program Note
Having roamed the world in search of becoming a better self, the nomadic director Alina Mustafina returns to her hometown of Almaty after 14 years. She builds a new home to live with her entire family, but before she can settle down, she must first embark on a journey. The director convinces her mother and grandmother to set out from Kazakhstan to Poland in search of the grave of her grandmother’s father, who died in World War II. Can this trip allow her grandmother to reconcile with her younger self, who had shouted in joy, “Our father died. They sent us gingerbread.” Gingerbread for Her Dad is an intimate and lyrical exploration of three generations of women in one family. Through close-ups that seem to capture every breath and meticulously crafted still-life and landscape shots, Mustafina’s transparent camera turns personal history into an elegant family drama.
