Bitter at being forgotten by a childhood sweetheart, a woman makes plans to destroy the subsequent life built by the man who is now a hotel owner. This is a darkly humorous adventure about the misperception of reality that attracts evil because of the absence of love. A picture of the sea becomes a real landscape and the film starts. Against the background of a hotel on the holiday beach, the story focuses on the couple owning the hotel, guests and the “power of evil” that observes them in the lighthouse. What is most visible in this film full of primary colors, is the limitless imagination of the director who makes the best use of unreal possibilities. An ominous green sap appears at the film’s beginning and spreads with strange music, while the “power of evil” becomes increasingly elaborate as it throws the hotel into turmoil. The music rises in a crescendo to reach its peak and the scenes make the audience burst out laughing. The film adds an exotic fairy-tale style to the classic comedy Mr. Hulot’s Holiday, and refers to some other cinematic auteurs, encouraging the audience to laugh even more. (RHEE Soue-won)
