Program Note
Three Buddhist nuns live together with nature. The younger nun Si-Ja lives with elderly Sang-No and Kyung-Hae, who suffers from dementia. Si-Ja′s days are comprised of making lotus-shaped lights and taking care of Sang-No. This may seem like a quiet and secluded life amidst the mountains, yet it is also a time filled with labor and the seeking of enlightenment. The film lets us follow the daily lives of these three nuns. Si-Ja witnesses the journey of life through images of withering old nuns. The image of Si-Ja tapping a wood block resembles a high priest united with nature, whereas Sang-No eating a chestnut evokes a child-like innocence. This film portrays the union of human and nature, as well as an extended journey towards spiritual awakening. Kyung-Hye leaves the peace of the temple as Si-Ja climbs the mountain, following Sang-No. Where have all the flowers gone? The breeze from the mountain tastes ever so sweet. (Kwon Yong-Min)
