Program Note
Nobuhiro Yamashita′s films have a unique sense of humor. Just like in his previous film No One′s Ark, he again makes us smile rather than laugh out loud in Ramblers with his own style. Most of his characters are losers who try hard but never succeed in anything, giving them a certain appeal and leading us to sympathy. An actor named Hunaki suggests going on a trip to Kinoshita, an amateur filmmaker, and Tsuboi, an amateur screenwriter. However, on the day of the trip, Hunaki doesn′t show up, so the two strangers have no choice but to go on an aimless trip together. The people that they meet in a small village are ordinary people just like them. However, since neither of the men is used to communicating with others, the two interact with each other in an awkward and hilarious way. The director makes us laugh describing how the eccentric characters behave in their everyday lives. In this vein, he uses extreme long shots to portray hilarious scenes, cementing his own style of comedy.(Kim Ji-seok)
