Program Note
The Suit is a new film by Bakhtiyar Khudoinazarov, the critically acclaimed director of Luna Papa and Kosh Ba Kosh. Passionate performances by the actors and free-flowing camerawork are the director′s signature style. The surreal spatial settings and unique characters make this film a bleak yet beautiful black comedy. One day, three boys from a fishing village near the Black Sea visit the city looking for fun. A very expensive Italian suit, displayed in a show window, catches their eyes. The boys believe they will look adult and cool in that gorgeous suit. After their attempt to steal it ends in failure, they get part time jobs at a carwash to earn money for the suit, but their salaries are never enough. Eventually, the three steal an oil truck, sell it, and buy the suit. The three wear the suit In tum to fulfill their wishes. One boy meets the father who abandoned him and his mother; another one declares his love for his stepmother, and the other one proposes to the owner of a fish stall. However, their wishes are never realized and instead, they eventually face bitter reality. (Michelle Sohn)
