Program Note
Delbaran is an international joint project by Iran and Japan, which depicts the life of a young Afghan boy, Kaim, in the Iranian border town of Delbaran. Kaim is a precocious boy who learns how the world functions. Kaim is a valet for the Khan couple who sells food and drinks to truck drivers passing through the town. Kaim, being precocious, is not bothered by the severe treatment he receives from the adults because he has already experienced war back in his home country of Afghanistan. Despite his difficult life Kaim, at times, feels and experiences love and affection from the people around him but realizes that those are attributes not dealt to him. Against his wishes, Kaim has grown cynical and his effort to overcome his difficulties is a clear example of a noble human effort to overcome tragedies in the face of an overwhelming historical tide. Kaim, in order to survive, moves around the desolate Afghan border roads by walking, running and by car. Throughy Kaim′s movements around the border one can naturally and clearly see the pains of regular Afghans. Delbaran is a film whose images and narrative powerfully depict the life of an area so remote that it has rarely been captured on film.
