Program Note
Under the name of globalization, all banking and insurance-related business enquiries from the United States and Europe are answered from toll-free numbers, with operators provided from India′s cheap
workforce. Sue, who just started her career in a call center, comes to know a millionaire named Lawrence and falls in love with him. Later, Lawrence comes to India to see her but their romance is interrupted by hit
men trying to kill the millionaire. Escaping from danger, they leave India for the United States. The stereotyped manners and voices of call center recruits sometimes dont sound like real humans, making it difficult for callers to imagine that someone on the other line is a real person. Personality and characteristic natures are completely hidden beneath the formal and limited responses they repeat, leaving no room for true communication. Perhaps, Sue′s kindness and eagerness to help Lawrence can be viewed as a type of love but the plot in which a poor but young beautiful woman falls in love with a rich man and throws away her dull boring daily life is just another Cinderella story. More so, people in India first started learning English during the colonial period. That explains why the scene in which Sue from the Third world of the post-colonization era smiles at the night view of Manhattan while the American millionaire does not look happy at all. (Oak Mina)
