Program Note
16-year-old Ipen sends money to her family from her job of babysitting 9-year-old Dajun, who has a huge hole in the heart caused by his parents divorce. While Dajun hates seeing the fat Ipen instead
of the mother he misses in his dreams, Ipen hates being responsible for him. Although they can′t see each other without fighting, they understand each other better than anyone else. Gluttony and
eccentricity are the only way of consoling their feelings of guilt and loneliness. And one day, they make an outrageous plan: faking Dajun′s kidnapping and asking for a ransom from his parents.
Bear Hug tries to find and embrace wounded children in the rapidly changing modern Taiwan. The children may be treated as adults too soon in their lives. Is it okay that a grown-up′s selfish desire
holds down the children′s desires? Wang Shau-di′s delicate, thoughtful eyes unveil children′s pure minds and holds the adults accountable silently and firmly, but not in hurting manner. Modern
families require sacrifice for comfort, and the sacrifice goes not only to the children, but also to the adults. The last sequence suggesting hugging the teddy bear seems to be warm but can also be
viewed as pessimistic. (Kang So-won)
