Black Friday is based on the terrible terror attacks on Bombay in 1999 - dubbed the Indian 9/11. The tragic religious fight between Muslims and Hindus left 300 dead and 800 wounded. Director Anurag Kashyap takes a realistic and comprehensive approach on why their discord had to end in such appalling terrorist bombings. Black Friday is different from other political thrillers such as Z. It focuses on a conspiracy rooted in religious conflicts in Indian society, and the circumstances that allowed anger to explode in the form of terrorism. Even before the Bombay Blasts, the tensions in Indian society were mounting, and they finally erupted in multiple terror attacks that were carried out simultaneously. The film exposes a dark side of Indian society that outsiders are not familiar with. The rage coming from religious conflict passes down through generations and is discharged in greater violence.
