Program Note
Yoichi Sai′s Blood and Bones is centered on a man who is hated and abandoned by everyone. His name is Kim Sun-pei. The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola depicted empty dreams and shadows of the “American Dream." Blood and Bones, based on a book by Yang Seok-il, is similar in the sense that it depicts a shattered Japanese Dream. Blood and Bones, however, focuses more on the cruel and selfish nature of a man. Kim Sun-pei, an 18 year-old boy that moves from Jeju Island, Korea to Osaka, Japan in 1923, is shunned by everyone because of his Violent personality. He beats his wife and children all the time, and is terribly stingy toward his employees at his fish factory. However even he can′t do anything about the passage of time. He is abandoned by everyone as he grows older and meets his tragic end in North Korea. The director doesn′t show sympathy for Kim Sun-pei. He only follows the track of Kim′s life which is controlled by greed. Sai Yoichi also shows how greed can devastate the lives of the surrounding people. This greedy character is successfully brought to life by the remarkable Takeshi Kitano. Blood and Bones surely leaves a strong impression behind. (Kim Ji-seok)
