Program Note
Butterfly is a love story. To be exact, a homosexual love story of a woman who has to deal with her dual sexual orientation. Flavia, a 30 year-old high school teacher, leads quite an ordinary life at home and at school. One day when she meets a girl in a supermarket, she realizes her internal desires were buried until that very moment. The girl completely takes over Flavia′s mind and reminds her of her first love - her first girlfriend. Although she wants to devote her life to her husband and kids, she knows the fatal temptation now makes it impossible. In the scene where Flavia is frightened by the reflected image of ber and her baby in a window, the director shows how painful it is and how much courage one needs to admit one′s true identity. Life can sometimes be a showcase for other people to look at. However, most of the time, it is about finding one′s true self. That is why life is sometimes so painful. Butterfly is a story of a woman going through an identity crisis and reaching the next stage of her life. (Kim Young-jin)
