Life is, sometimes, like a bondage you can never be free of. This is why many myths and legends have commonly used ′original sin′ and ′cruel fate of life′ as their main theme. In that sense, Guansheng′s destiny depicted in Day and Night is mythical. Guansheng lives and works with Zhongmin at a coalmine. Guangsheng looks up to Zhongmin as a father figure. Even so, he is having an affair with Zhongmin′s wife. One day when an accident breaks out at the coalmine, Guansheng escapes, leaving Zhongmin behind. Feeling guilty of what he had done, Guansheng buys the abandoned coalmine later and make a fortune from it. Then, he tries to clear his sin by getting A Fu, Zhongmin′s son married and handing him over all his fortune. But, falling into an inappropriate and subtle relationship with A Fu′s bride, Guansheng faces confusion again. Like Sisyphus in Greek mythology, Guansheng is stuck in the cruel fate of life. Director Wang Chao eloquently shows how weak the human will is, and, furthermore, how weak the goodwill of the society we′ re living in is. This is also the way Director Wang Chao sees China today. The director′s intention of revealing his theme through a myth brilliantly succeeded in criticizing the current Chinese society, which weighs the depth of this film. (Kim Ji-seok)
