Program Note
This is the Chinese version of Cinema Paradiso. Beautiful memories about movies have a huge influence on the individual, regardless of space and time. Jiang Xiao′s debut film Electric Shadows describes love, hate, and reconciliation of a family through the movies. Delivering spring water on his bike, Dabing accidently kills a dog on the street and loses consciousness when hit suddenly by a brick thrown by a girl named Ling Ling. This accident leads him to follow Ling Ling′s past. In her younger years, Ling Ling accidently killed her younger brother, Dng Bìng, who was born from her mother and stepfather, Poon, who was a film projection operator. After beaten by her stepfather to the point where she became deaf, Ling Ling escaped from the nouse and has led her life filled with quilt. Dabing finally tells her family about her, and in the garden of the hospital where Ling Ling is, the parents present an outdoor screening that is remembered as the most beautiful memory for the family. Watching a movie with others in one place is a precious experience that allows the sharing of mutual emotions. In this sense, Electric Shadows is a perfect praise of cinema. (Kim Ji-seok)
Director
Xiao Jiang
Born in 1972, Xiao Jiang was an active member of her college drama society. Though she didn’t know a lot about filmmaking, she decided to pursue her graduate studies in film directing at the Beijing Film Academy. There she studied many European classics, though it was her tutor, Prof. Jiang Shixiog, who influenced her filmmaking, and impressed upon her the importance of the Chinese audience when she makes her films. As 2005 is the 100th anniversary of Chinese filmmaking, she considers Electric Shadows to be her gift to the Chinese filmmaking industry.
