Program Note
In the summer of 1974 when the Cultural Revolution sways the fate of ordinary people, Xing Yu and Si Mong happen to bump into each other on a bus. That short moment decides their destiny forever. The Foliage is a story about a destined love that is swayed by historical events. Ding Guo, Xing Yu′s boyfriend, is also the leader of the commune she belongs to. The tragic background of the Cultural Revolution and the emotional entanglement and tension that the triangular relationship brings well serve to depict the thirty-year-long love story that the three characters live through. The story ends, letting all of them meet together. Then, there follows an interesting epilogue, which allows room for the viewer′s imagination; which is, "What if they did not come across each other on the bus?" What makes this vain assumption keep repeating? Was it really destiny? Or, was it just history? The film gives us no answer. Instead, it pushes any pessimistic or optimistic views aside, and then questions again whether their love was real. When an unwelcome part of history meets an overly excessive passion, the emotion derived from it is often viewed as their destiny. Then, is it in fact history that the director wanted to rewrite through this typical love story? For director Lu Yue, love and destiny make a pair, but the destiny is more convincing when it is paired with history. That is because the historys dark shadow stays longer even after the sun goes down. (Kang So-won)
