Program Note
Shunji Iwai, who has been creating his own artistic world while still capturing a contemporary sensitivity this time enters the heart of a teenage girl. The funny love story of Hana and Alice, who live in The Iwai World′ will be sure to charm everyone. Hana blatantly lies to a boy who she and Alice have been watching over. One day, he accidentally hits his head against a door and passes out. They become lovers thanks to her lies that claim they′ ve already been in love. But things start to get complicated when a lie is followed another lie. Hana and Alice starts with the unexpected romance of Hana and develops into a coming-of-age story of two girls and a boy finding their own egos. Hand-held camera shooting and jump-cuts help the audience to understand the fear, loneliness and deprivation of these upbeat girls. They are 15-year-old girls who are happy and sad at the same time. To look into this humorous but sensitive world requires special insights. Shunji Iwai is a master of viewing the girly sensitivity up close. The film proves that this sensual stylist has been building his own cinematic world. (Kang So-won)
