Program Note
Jiang Hu is a new take on Hong Kong Cinema′s celebrated triad genre. Wong Ching-po, a director of independent films, has successfully filmed Jiang Hu by adding modern touches to traditional gangster films. Right after the birth of his son, Hung Yan, a crime boss, wants to leave Jiang Hu once and for all. Jiang Hu literally means the triad zone. However, the other gang bosses won′t let him go that easy. Hung′s longtime friend, Lefty, is one of those bosses. He wants to wipe out the other bosses, even his friend Hung. In the meantime, a young gangster, Yick Chai, who has just joined the triad and his friend Turbo are assigned on a killing mission. Towards the end of the film, the director gives the film an unexpected twist. Wong Ching-po contrasts the bosses Hung Yan and Lefty with voung triads Yick Chai and Turbo who has been given a killing mission, while adding twists at the end. He attempts to make his film an exciting epic drama. Although such attempts fall a bit shorter than the aim, the film surely is new and different form the umpteen triad dramas. The scene where Hung Yan and Lefty are unexpectedly attacked at the end of the film, paradoxically, looks like some kind of graceful performance. (Kim Ji-seok)
