Program Note
The film is based on a true story. In the rural village of Prom Pi Ram, Thailand, a young woman is found dead beside the train tracks. At first, her death seems like an accident. As the police investigation progresses, however, it is found that the killing was in fact the outcome of a very complicated and dreadful situation involving many people. Samnian is a weak, vulnerable woman. She is exposed to various threats as she leaves her hometown to find her husband. Of Course the dangerous threats come from men who do not have anything to do with her. The film reveals a series of tragic events that happen to unprotected women; tragedies that happen quite regularly to women everywhere else in the world, but never to men. Macabre Case of Prom Pi Ram painfully points out that rape is as grave a crime as murder, but the perpetrators never feel as guilty due to pervasive social indifference. It is a typical investigative film that follows the footsteps of a crime, only more achingly depicted. (Kim Young-jin)
