Program Note
M. F. Husain, director of Meenaxi: Tale of 3 Cities, is known as a great figure of Indian art history. Meenaxi: Tale of 3 Cities carries strange colors that seem to cast strange spells. The film does not describe the characters with pretense; on the contrary, they exist as they are. The main character Nawab is a novelist. A mysterious woman named Meenaxi visits him one day and asks him to write a story using herself as the protagonist. As Nawab writes many different stories, the screen is painted with poetic colors. Meenaxi: Tale of 3 Cities satisfies both storytelling and artistic needs while setting itself as a perfect example of successfully combining popular cinema with a director′s artistic vision. The sense of Bollywood, the cinematic form that embraces musical-like storytelling, guides the audience through the film. This may be another story about the relationship between an artist and the muse that inspires him, but the film leaves a poetic aftertaste with its canvas-like colors. (Kim Young-jin)
