Cui Zi′en, one of the leaders in Chinese queer cinema, has always been interested in boys on the street. Aside from showing the director′s consistent interest on boys, Night Scene is an equivocal, multi-layered film in various senses. The film is neither fiction nor a documentary; it is visual ethnography, but it goes across allthe genre boundaries. The film does not maintain its perspective of social critique, and it doesn′t give an kinds of attraction and criticism in this film. The director never tries to divide the homosexual and the gigolos, and the audience can never see the borderline between the fictional and non-fictional. In this film, there is a world without any single clear line of right/wrong, truth/lie. About 10 boys tell their own stories. They don′t hide anything in telling their experiences of love, prostitution, let alone their sordid realities and wishes. There aiso come he comments from doctors, activists and researchers, However, these voices don t make any conclusions. This ethnography without any particular aim can′t make any concrete result. Instead, they deline their own lives with some words: "We are nothing, We have nothing. We are a tragic generation. We are a ridiculous generation. We are a generation of innocence. We are a generation of loss. We are gay. Wve are people with warm hearts." Some boys learn life from the street through very bodily experiences, which can never be entirely captured by camera.
