Program Note
In 1968 Kyoto, Japanese high school student Kosuke spends everyday dreaming of having girlfriend. An-sung, the leader of a delinquent group at a Korean high school for Korean residents, spends everyday fighting against rowdy Karate students of the Japanese high school where Kosuke goes. Things are always tense between the students of these two high schools, continuing the ruthless battle of hate. One day, Kosuke is forced to visit the Korean high school to ask for a football match. He encounters An-sung′s beautiful sister Kyung-ja (Sawajiri Erika) and immediately falls in love. Although bewildered with the gap between their surrounding culture and background, Kosuke tries to approach Kyung-ja learning "Imgin River" - even though it is a ′prohibited′ song of that period. Through such efforts, and always aware that they are from
rivaling schools, Kosuke gradually becomes friends with An-sung and his group, while the Korean juveniles keep fighting against the Karate students. Kosuke also gets closer to Kyung-ja, but the more Kosuke gets to know about the life of his Korean friends, he realizes their toughness is a result of them being Korean residents in Japan. His struggle begins to overcome the big invisible wall to gain real friendship and love. (production notes)
