Program Note
Jackie Chan founded a production company with a vision of making unique films with universal appeal with new directors. One turned out to be the multi-talented Kenneth Bi, once a music video director, scriptwriter, composer, producer, and actor. Rice Rhapsody reconciles culture and generation gaps, and is a film that meets Jackie Chan′s vision. Jen, who raised three sone running a restaurant in Singapore′s Chinatown, has a mission to complete: to preserve her youngest son Leo′s heterosexuality since her other two sons are gay. She aranges to take in a female French exchange student, Sabine, to inspire his interests in girls. But the complicated world doesn′t allow things to go as she plans. The combination of the beautiful but peculiar scholar Sabine and the guy next door, Kim Chui, change Jen instead of Leo. Sabine whispers into Jen′s ear: "Live your life. Nobody can stop you." Rice Rhapsody shows the process of one who realizes her prejudice and then discovers the hidden force of the universe. The film′s sensitive touch can be compared to the pleasure of watching a good chef cooking. Director Bi has skillfully cooked up some Hainan Chicken Rice, which almost all Chinese enjoy eating, but is not easy to prepare. (Kang So-won)
