Program Note
This is the second film by Director Hassan Yektapanah, whose previous film, Djomeh, won the Cannes Film Festival′s Camera d′Or for best feature. A group of masked Iranians sitting in a bus is headed for a different wond, escaping Iran. They are illegal immigrants, Hiding their identities in disguise with wigs, dyed hair and Color contact lenses, they are eager to reach the border, Then, the director switches the focus to the story of a documentary director and a cameraman filming those illegal immigrants. By doing so, the result is a view the world through two different gazes at the same time, In Story Undone, there exist two realities: one represented mthe camera of the documentary director and the other caught through the eye of Director Hassan Tektapanah who wants to dramatize the former. These two exist separately but are not different, and they also overlap, which makes the reality of Iran more visible than ever. In the latter part of the film, the documentary director, in front of his camera, choose to stay with the illegal immigrants till the end, which impresses viewers deeply. That scene represents the moment of stepping out from the film and walking into reality. But, once the distance disappears, danger will come. Director Yektapanah makes an interesting attempt to place the relationship between film and reality, documentary and film drama, and record and reconstruction in the theme of the heavy tragedy. Not only that, he successfully proved his directing talents by cleverly adding humor here and there in the film, not loosening the tension of the plot even slightly. (Kang So-won)
