In the war zone of Kurdistan bordering Iran, on one side, a group of soldiers are searching for landmines. On the other side, a girl is shepherding her sheep. The two that never seem to get alona are always on full alert. They live where anyone without clear id can be regarded as an enemy and they are already accustomed to it. "Who can tell who knows the person standing next to you?" The Tear of the Cold is a story about a shepherd girl from the Kurdish guerrillas and a soldier whose job is to eliminate the very landmines planted by them. The two enemies, stuck in a heavy snowfall, help each other survive but fail to keep their alliances and eventually make a choice leading to a tragic ending. This Kurdish director Azizollah Hamidnezhad fills the film with dramatic emotions and gazes at the space of tragedy as if the film is a documentary. In this way, the director painfully describes that the understanding is what the blindness of war and the cold face of ideology fear most. Besides, the story of those who are ready to sacrifice their own lives is heartbreakingly unbearably sad. Though there is no intended shot to impress the viewers, the humble gaze of the camera never fails to capture the dramatic intensity of the film. (Kang So-won)
