Tragedy is not over yet. Bahman Ghobadi, who has been continuously talking about the sad history and fate of the Kurds, turns to tell another bitter story of the American attack on Irag. Many people who have been suffering under Saddam′s regime swarm around a border region in Irag upon hearing rumors of a possible American attack on Iraq. Among the flocked people are Hengow, an armless boy, and Agrine, a young girl who is mother to a child. A boy, nicknamed Satellite, who has his own way of survival, falls in love with Agrine at first sight. However, all Agrine can think of is committing suicide because of her painful memory of being raped by soldiers. Before making his feature film A Time for Drunken Horses, Bahman Ghobadi shot a short film under the same title. Likewise, he made a medium-length documentary War is Over to get the motive for Turtles Can Fly. This time, Bahman Ghobadi leaves his boundary of the Kurds and talks about the reality of war and tyranny that opress the children. Children must learn their way to survive and even face death threats to eke out a living. In front of their cruel reality, Hengow′s foresight and Satellite′s love are helpless. Hengow turns his back on the viewers when he loses Agrine. This particular scene reminds the viewers of the tragic reality in Iraq, in a time of distress that is far from over. (Kim Ji-seok)
