Program Note
A poor farmer, De-shan, living in a cold and dry village in the midst mist-covered rocky mountains, gets the chance of a lifetime: he receives two sheep for free as part of the village development
program. The two imported sheep, American male and French female, start to ruin his life. De-shan makes a fold inside his home as they cry because of the cold, and has to travel far and wide
to find fresh grass which forces him into bankruptcy. Meanwhile, raising the sheep becomes the biggest political task of Uncle De-shan′s entire life. The film portrays De-shan′s efforts with the sheep in a minimalist style, which allows the audience to feel the weariness of the life by simply watching it. Director Liu Hao goes between long shots of the small town in the Chinese mountains and hand-held close-ups of people′s realities, suddenly changing the dimension of the film. As De-shan′s true intention in sacrificing himself for the sheep is gradually revealed, this irony becomes one big comedy. Two Great Sheep′s simplicity shows the strength of Chinese independent cinema on the screen. (Kang So-won)
