Program Note
What would have happened when Beckham met Owen? They met and played the soccer. Then, how about when David met Michael? They also played the soccer. And Michael happened to love David.. When Beckham Met Owen is the story of two 13 year-old-boys getting lost between friendship and love. Innocent and shy Michael who lives with picky mother is the sidekick of outgoing and active David. They do not do
anything without the other: They study, play soccer, and even take showers together. But one day, Michael starts to experience funny feelings when he hugs David during the goal celebration. Is this love? Director Adam Wong observes these feelings from a distance, keeping the rhythm of the film tight yet keeping the story loose. Going deeper and deeper into the episodes of the other characters, this film doesn′t require the audience to read it as the serious exploration of teenage sexuality. The ending sequence shows the two boys exchanging blows in the middle of the night instead of showing their real feelings, cross-cut with hugging scenes of many soccer players after their goals. Beckham hugs Owen and gives him a kiss while the boys fight on the playground. With this sequence, the director tells us that it′s not important whether it′s love or friendship the boys feel: it′s simply how they grow up. (Kang So-won)
