PIFF almost regularly invites this director. Mani Ratnam is again invited to PIFF with his praise song of youth. The youth are full of a passion, wanting to change society. Youth can be reckless, at times, when it comes to love. Youth can also be naive and can be easily fooled by others. Ratnam talks about the three main characteristics of youth through three couples: Michael, a student movement leader, and his girlfriend Radhika; Arjun who dreams of successful love and social life, and his lover Mira; and Lallan, who comes from a poor family and becomes a political gangster, and his girlfriend Sashi. Ratnam often mixes political situations with his melodramas, but he does not make any judgments. Youth is no exception to this formula. He touches on the different yet similar passions of Michel, Arjun and Lallan. They come from different classes, have different ideals and characters. However, they have the same passion when it comes to love. Ratnam creates an intersection of the three with his well-written story and skillful directing. At the intersection, he praises youth that flows with the passion of love. Ratnam′s longtime partner A.R. Rahman again created the beautiful soundtrack for the film. (Kim Ji-seok)
