Program Note
This is a story of Eva, a single mother who struggles to support herself and her daughter Jenny. She is tired of jobs like night duty at the local hospital and house cleaning for retired and disabled people. Her real passion is painting, and her dream is to be able to survive as an artist. Eva and Jenny walk along the banks of the river, when they suddenly discover a dead body. Eva runs to the nearest phone booth, but instead of calling the police, she calls her father and asks of his well-being. Why? "The first time I read Karin Fossum′s novel, it struck me how original and unpredictable it was This is a story where the tension is more focused on the characters and what happens to them, than the actual plot. The story tells about ordinary day of life in Norway. It is easy to identity with, and is therefore believable. Also, I like that the crucial issue is not "who" but "why"." (Berit Nesheim)
