Program Note
Blind American blues legend, Paul Pena played with greats such as T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, and Bonnie Raitt. In 1995 he became the first American to compete in an unusual contest of multi-
harmonic ′throatsinging′, an art form practiced in the Autonomous Republic of Tuva. Pena discovered this amazing art form fifteen years ago and taught himself to liken his voice to the
sounds of tremors in the earth. He then went on to make history in the National Theatre of Tuva and was honored by the people of Tuva, not only because he won the contest but also because he
learned to speak their language. This film is about exploration and friendship and the story of a man whose struggle in life is not defined by conformity and rules but by an unquenchable curiosity and
love of music.
