Program Note
A [Fish] ranks, along with [The Passion of a Man Called Choe Che-u] of New Currents, among the truly great finds at this year’s festival. Shot entirely in 3D with a budget of about $70,000, the film is a ‘trans-mystery drama’ about a professor who searches for the wife who left him, and the private detective who delivers the news that the wife has become a shaman. But the film’s plot is merely a front. In order to follow the story, spectators must deduce a great deal. A series of twists add to the complexity of the plot and blur the border between fantasy and reality. It is difficult to discern whether some characters are real or illusion, the narrative is so complex. What is more amazing is that the director who is around thirty years old studied 3D technology on his own and completed the film and the 3D subtitles, average cost of $20,000, himself. However, the quality of the film would be just as outstanding in 2D, for its narrative is the powerful force of the film. (JEON Chanil)
