Program Note
This documentary discusses the lives at stake in a coal town located in northeast India. The miners, most of whom are immigrants, risk their lives every day to mine coal using just a little torch and a small pickaxe. They dream of getting out of there and find better lives, but it never seems to be easy. The film follows 10-year-old Suraj to show what terrible conditions he has to deal with and how hard it is to escape. Suraj lives with an alcoholic father and works at a mine to save money for school. But when his family decides to go back to their hometown in Nepal, his dream shatters. Without any over the top rhetoric or dramatic settings, the film quietly encourages this little boy as he overcomes the never-ending hardships by way of simple narration, empathetic interviews and austere still images. He may end up being another coal miner of the town in the future, but he struggles today not to be devoured by the abyss. (CHO Hyeyoung)
