Program Note
This coming-of-age road movie begins in a remote village protected by the spirits of the cliffs. Ominous music heralds the beginning of young Adama’s journey to find his brother; one that will take him to an outside world overshadowed by war.
Depicting the horrors of war from a young, innocent boy’s point of view, film poses the question, “Who is war for?” When he finds his brother—whose eyes and expression have changed—and all others have died, should he go back to the village or to that the dreamy world after death? Characters are drawn in three dimensions, so facial expressions and movements are effective. Various metaphors, particularly of a saint represented as a clown, add further appeal to this film.
