This film is about the creme de la creme of society who are addicted to the sweet taste of money as they pursue their desires at the price of public humiliation with only a hint of redemption. The main character’s name is Joo Youngjak which indicates that this is a continuation of the male character from the filmA Good Lawyer’s Wife. If you’ve seen any of the director’s other films, starting with <Girls′ Night Out to The Housemaid>, you can easily identify how he sharply criticizes and ridicules the other side of capitalistic system. The immediacy is what makes this film both strong and weak at the same time. Because this acute awareness is cathartic but at times so obvious that it hinders any attempt at a different interpretation. It’s not that there is no room for a different interpretation. If you “read” this film as a murderous melodrama as opposed to some kind of statement of social condemnation, this possibility comes into play. Could it be the desires of these four characters who will do anything to find the reason for existence even if it is grasping at something that only resembles true love? And the hint of redemption that lingers over these seemingly impossible associations is a welcome thought. (JEON Chanil)
