Program Note
This romantic box office hit revolves around a love story between two students, its bitter disintegration and rekindling 15 years later. A great part of the film’s success must be attributed to the brilliant casting of Han Ga-in and Uhm Tae-woong as well as Suji and Lee Je-hoon as their younger selves and their clear chemistry they demonstrate on screen. The film’s themes focuses on the personal rather than the societal, completely excluding social issues. Regardless of the director′s intention, this represents a clever reflection on the individualistic mindset of the 1990s in Korean history, as distinguished from the emphasis on the collective 1980s. The film’s time period appealed to an audience that was in school at that time. “An Essay of Memory” the song by Exhibition from 1994, which appears on the soundtrack, also contributed to the success of the film. The emotionally dense love story between the main characters reconstructs the ’90s in the same way director Kim Daeseung′s
<Bunjee Jumping of Their Own> (2001) did the ’80s. It may not be long before the 2000s is given a similar treatment by filmmakers. (JEON Chanil)
