Program Note
The latest Hong Sang-soo film is characterized by the unique motif of repetition and variation. In the film, a student majoring in cinema moves to Mohang, a small beach town, following her mother, who fled from creditors. The girl writes a script to ease her boredom and anxiety, which consists of three parts, each part telling a story about a french woman named Anne, who is a popular filmmaker, an adulterous middle-aged woman and a divorcee. Three colors, three opening credits and three episodes provide entertaining repetition and variation. But the most memorable aspect of the film is French superstar Isabelle Huppert’s performance as three different women. Huppert is among the most accomplished actresses in the world, and she gives all three Anne a carefree believability that only she could provide. It is a stand-out performance, but her Korean co-stars also have their moments to shine. Yu Jun-sang as a lifeguard in all three episodes delivers a foxy and extraordinary performance, and Moon Sung-keun is outstanding as always as one of the Anne’s Korean lover. (JEON Chanil)
