Program Note
This widely talked-about film is becoming a worldwide sensation simply with the name ′KIM Ki-duk.′ It is the film which for the first time in Korean film history won the Golden Lion in Venice Film Festival, and is selected as a Korean entry for Best Foreign Language Film in the Academy Awards 2013. Shocking settings and twists in the plot penetrate throughout the piece, which no one else but Kim could have imagined and realized. One might summarize it as Kim’s ′post-Bad Guy.′ Kang-do is a ′bad guy′ who gets money from his debtors in the most evil way. Grown up all by himself, one day he meets a woman, supposedly his ′mother.′ He constantly doubts who she is and experiences confusion, but is gradually attracted to her. Her sudden disappearance soon reveals the dark secrets between them. Without losing his unique visual style and storytelling, the director suggests the themes of love, hope, change and salvation, as anticipated in Amen. He has added another magnificent work to his filmography since <Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring> and <3-Iron>, while actors Cho Min-soo and Lee Jung-jin have earned a piece of their lifetime.
