Program Note
After Hera witnesses her brother’s absurdly crazy death in the fields, she begins to hate god who took him from her, and finds solace in her brother’s beloved heavy metal music. She announces that she will leave town to become a rock star but can’t bring herself to get on the bus, and causes havoc throughout her town. What’s notable about Ragnar Bragason’s Metalhead is its take on heavy metal. First, it is pictured as the way out for the main character, who can’t suppress her emotions after turning her back on god. Thus heavy metal is portrayed as evil. But there exist some moments where god and heavy metal make peace. It is especially heartwarming to see the family reconnect with each other as they dance away to heavy metal at the end. The film is also brimming with music by famous bands, and in the end seems to find heavy metal in its favor. (RHEE Soue-won)
