Program Note
n the opening credits, a drunken man appears. He repeatedly shouts ‘another drink’, finally biting the glass when the bartender refuses to give him another drink. This man is Francis Bosco, a deteriorated magician. He has a ten-year-old son, and this child is the principle reason for his wish to return to the stage and overcome chronic alcoholism. All the mishaps that happen to them afterward may be called common misfortunes that befall the poor. But that doesn’t make a fine consolation for this heart-breaking sorrow of this tragedy. Eric Khoo, director of Be With Me, wrote the scenario for this film in 2 days; the film itself took only 12 days to shoot, with the actual magician Francis Bosco. All the grotesque feats in the film like biting glass, eating fire, punching a tongue with an iron skewer were all directly performed by Bosco himself. That fact itself is marvelous enough, but the more amazing moment comes in the last scene. An illusive sequence bestowing courage to a child left alone to survive - this is the real magic of the film. (KANG Sowon)
