This is the 7th movie by director Ho-Cheung Pang who has made several witty movies since his debut You Shoot, I Shoot in 2001. Trivial Matters is an omnibus movie with 7 short stories. The director makes up a series of jokes and presents them one by one. In one story, a couple maintain their virginity by only engaging in oral sex on holidays, but their activities result in the asphyxiation of the woman. In another, the director concocts a fake story that the original sin of human beings is derived from a lie. Pretending to be serious, he tells dirty, embarrassing, erotic, and scary stories as if to say ‘How do you like this story? Not fun? What about this one?’ The stories of Trivial Matters comprise every genre from melodrama through science fiction. Each story has a different style and tone. Even the running time of the stories varies from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. The only common thread in the whole movie is ‘black comedy’. Upon watching this movie, it makes complete sense that the director was a comedy show writer for Hong Kong TV. (KANG Sowon)
