Program Note
The film starts on a day when Yokoyamas’ second son Ryota, accompanied by his new wife, visits the house of his parents. The family has not gathered together; after some small talk and a banquet, a faint tension still exists between them. What happened to this family 12 years ago? Hirokazu Koreeda’s sixth film Still Walking is about Ryota spending two days and one night with his family. In this film, Kore-eda outstretches a family story which may stand comparison with Yasujiro Ozu works. For example, using low-angle, shots of a dinner table, insert of laundry or vase and so on are attributed as ‘Ozu-style’. What is more than technical conventions, an aphorism of life as ‘disappointing thing’ and showing it with ceremonial process such as rear, marriage, funeral all remind us of Ozu. The director also adds his severe point of view on it. Therefore, we may call it a structure built on the collapsed landscape of family, done in an Ozu-like way. A dead child, a family destructed by divorce or death, heredity never inherited, father and son determine not to talk each other - all this makes up the landscape of a modern family that sharply pricks our attention.
