Program Note
The Tin Mine is the second film of Jira Maligool, a director, producer, cinematographer, and scenario writer in Thailand. It portrays four years of a man who has been given a second chance in a tin mine after being expelled from his college. The film is based on an autobiographic novel of Archin Panjabhan. It is the growth story of a grown man. The Tin Mine is full of the laughter and joy of miners rather than their sweat and painful groans. In the midst of singing, laughing, drinking and enjoying, a city boy becomes a bronzed man. An important lesson is taught by riding the simple rhythm of the life: the river and mud, the sun and rain, mining and enjoying, and love and broken hearts. The film is more than a poetic portrayal of the miners - it is the nostalgia of the 1940s. The Tin Mine features the everyday life of joyful and energetic miners. It tells us that maturity comes with physical work. The story unfolds rapidly with narrations and light songs and reflects the life of a man who lived his life passionately in the 1940s. The film reminds us how fast Thai film is evolving. (Kang So-won)
