Program Note
The latest film by Deepa Mehta is a story of the repressed life of Indian widows. 1938, India. The just-married eight-year-old girl Chuyia becomes a widow after her husband passes away. Under Hindu doctrine that believes a wife is responsible for her husband′s death, Chuyia is confined to a house for widows. The elderly widow who is head of the house tells Chuyia that when a husband is alive, a wife is part of the husband, but when he′s dead, then half of the wife is also dead. Kalyani is attracted to a progressive young man who she met by chance. However, she has to make a living by prostitution. It′s the time when closely held dogma was shaken up and Gandhi′s ideas were awakening India. The women of India in the past had hopeless lives, and Water speaks out about the systematic contradictions in India through these women. However, the film itself fell victim to the same discrimination in the 21st century, similar to that faced by these women or by Gandhi. Hindu fundamentalists burnt down the film set and made threats to kill. Producer George Lucas took out an ad in Variety, magazine to support the production of Water. After 5 years, the film was finally completed in Sri Lanka, disguised under another title. How should women of the world live their lives? How can films be made in the midst of ignorance and madness? The answer is in this story about a little girl from India. (Kwon Yong-min)
