Program Note
Randall Miller′s award-winning short film was the basis for this feature length film. A bakery worker, Frank, still reeling from the death of his wife, goes to the aid of a man trapped in a car wreck. The man, Steve, was rushing to the Marilyn Hotchkiss dance school for a reunion with an old childhood love. His dying request is for Frank to go and meet the woman, Lisa, on his behalf. Frank does so, and from there on an old-fashioned fairy-tale of nostalgia unfolds. One that is tempered by an examination of loss, the grieving process, and letting go. The transformative power of dance is the key to Frank′s rejuvenation. The film features all the conventions of films of its ilk, like Shall We Dance, with an assortment of oddball characters, and implausible actions and reactions. But the sweet predictability is what makes the film a refreshingly un-cynical throwback to a simpler, more innocent time. For anyone who wished to relive a happier past, or simply wondered, what if.
