Program Note
"It is rather ironic that while his name is well know and respected around the world, in his native Hungary there is still some remaining controversy that surrounds his name, especially as his person and events of 1956 often become victims of petty political battles. The film attempts to show the martyr, Prime Minister Imre Nagy′s fate from an entirely new perspective." -Márta Mészáros Imre Nagy began his revolutionary action in the mid-1950s and was on of the most influential figures in modem Hungarian history. For his work in facing down the Soviet Union and pulling Hungary out of the Warsaw Pact he was exiled, imprisoned, executed and relegated to oblivion. His name went unspoken and his deeds unrecognised until official state documents were reviewed just a few years ago. The script is based on Nagy′s own diaries, accounts by his daughter and newly unsealed interrogation records. The Unburied Man not only sheds light on an important and overlooked 20th century figure, but also on Hungary′s own Holocaust, and its existence as a communist state.
