Program Note
Director Josef Fares is shifting tone, style and subject with Zozo. His first feature Jalla! Jallal and the follow-up, Kops, were representative Scandinavian comedies, with absurd misunderstandings and clashes of culture and generation. Now Fares draws on his immigrant roots for his latest. His newest feature is about 12-year-old Zozo and his flight to Sweden after tragedy strikes. Fares left Lebanon for Sweden when he was 10, but once claimed that the film is in no way autobiographical. Zozo is growing up in Beirut, trying to live as normal a life as possible-even amid a civil war. When he loses the comfort of his family and friends he must make his way to Sweden alone in order to start a new life in an unknown country. Though the film is not purely autobiographical, Fares has been toying with the story as a film for some time. Deeply personal and at least inspired by his own experiences, Zozo incorporates drama and emotion into the narrative while never completely abandoning his trademark sense of humor and eye for visuals.
