Program Note
Happy death to all! This event which absurdly transforms a falsely-charged death into a happy execution for the sake of politics is a most biting parody on the political process. Set in a small
village in Kerala, Southern India. A seasonal worker named Krishnan, poor and unemployed, is arrested for stealing a land-owner′s coconut. The campaign season is at its height and the ruling
party politicians, worried about losing votes due to an unsolved murder case, falsely charge Krishnan as the murderer and give him the death penalty. The politicians enact their compassion towards the
poor man by announcing their plan to import an electric chair to grant Krishnan a painless death. The ceremony of death is conducted in the manner of a festival and Krishnan is hailed as a saint.
Murali Nair parodies the contradictory and deceitful facade of politicians by simplifying the storyline and depicting the life of Krishnan and his family in the most inconspicuous way. The villagers gather
to celebrate Krishnan′s death. Meanwhile the scene where Krishnan′s wife and children sit next to the politicians on the platform ironically magnifies this tragic incident. A film which evokes a sense
of life′s futility rather than anguish, bitter humor rather than sadness. (Kim Ji-Seok)
