Program Note
"This was a story that had to be told, a story that would take cinema-goers around the world inside and event that, to all our great shame, we knew nothing about. But more than that, it would allow audiences to join in the... courage of a man who could have been any of us-if we ever could find that courage." -Terry George In 1994, Hutus in Rwanda carried out Tutsi genocide as the West sat idly by. In Kigali, Hutu Paul Rusesabagina manages the Hotel des Mille Collines, catering to pampered diplomats and influential locals. Violence erupts, and Rusesabagina comes to a dangerous moral decision. When the UN and the hotel′s Belgian management make it clear that no outside help will be forthcoming, he chooses to act, offering refuge in the hotel to over 1,000 Tutsis. Using his considerable connections and his position as a Hutu, he ensures the safety of those in his charge. Inspiring, moving, and infuriating in equal measure, Hotel Rwanda is based on the true story of Rusesabagina′s individual generosity and courage.
